The village of
Muasdale is situated on the west coast of Kintyre, 15 miles
north of Campbeltown and 23 miles south of Tarbert. Muasdale
is an ideal location for exploring Kintyre and the Islands
with the ferry to the beautiful island of Gigha only 2 miles
away, the ferry to Islay, Jura and Colonsay a further 13 miles
north at Kennacraig and on the east , at Claonaig is the ferry
to Arran. Muasdale enjoys
wonderful uninterrupted views across to Gigha, Islay and Jury
and the sunsets are breathtaking.
The village
takes its name from the Norse mungasdale, the valley of the
monks. In 1263 King Haakon of Norway was anchored with
his long ship off the coast of Gigha when his priest died.
The body was put ashore at Muasdale for the Saddell Abbey
monks to carry his body over the hills for burial.
